Naltrexone Tablet

Naltrexone tablet is mainly used to manage opioid addiction and alcohol dependence, as it is an opioid receptor antagonist.
How does it work?
Although it is not fully known how, Naltrexone reduces the craving for alcohol that alcohol dependent people may experience after they have stopped drinking. In case of opioid addicts, this drug blocks the effects of drugs such as cocaine and heroin in the brain. Being an opioid receptor antagonist, Naltrexone blocks the reaction of the specific part of the brain that is responsible for feeling of pleasure on taking drugs.

What Are the Side Effects?

On ingesting Naltrexone tablets, some people may experience side effects like nervousness, upset stomach, anxiety, and joint and muscle pain. Usually these symptoms are mild and do not last very long, but can cause problems for some people.  Rarely, the symptoms are more severe and may cause drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, liver failure, blurred vision, and so on. If any of these symptoms are experience, individuals should consult their doctor immediately.

Who Can Take Naltrexone?

Naltrexone tablets can only be used once the person has completely stopped taking opioids or drinking alcohol for at least a week to ten days. If taken when someone is still on drugs, it can cause serious problems.
There are also situations like pregnancy and breastfeeding, and conditions like liver and kidney disease, and acute hepatitis where Naltrexone tablets are contraindicated. Therefore, it is advised that patients only use the tablet after consultation with a doctor.
