Buprenorphine is a drug used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is sometimes also used to reduce pain before and after surgery. It works on the nerves and brain to reduce the pain one may experience.
This drug is also used in the treatment if certain drug addictions. However, for this a different land of the tablet is used.

How it Works:
Buprenorphine is an opioid partial agonist. Because of this, its maximal effects are less than those of full agonists like methadone or heroine, although it does produce certain side effects like respiratory depression and euphoria. When given in lower doses, this drug produces enough agonist effects to help drug addicted individuals to discontinue using drugs without really experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

Buprenorphine has lesser risk of side effects, abuse, abuse, or addiction as compared to full opioid agonists. Some of the side effects that associated with this drug are vomiting, constipation, headache, stomach pain, sweating, and nausea.
Drugs like buprenorphine can precipitate the opioid withdrawal syndrome. Also, individuals who are on buprenorphine can also experience precipitation of the withdrawal syndrome.

What happens in case of buprenorphine overdose?
In case of overdose, make sure you call your doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdose include: extreme drowsiness, dizziness, pinpoint pupils, blurred vision and slowed breathing.

Do not stop your dose of buprenorphine without consulting your doctor. Stopping it suddenly may cause withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will advise you how to properly stop the buprenorphine dosage.
